SEOULPOP GUIDE / BEFORE OPENING

What changes when you sell or sample products?

Selling is not a button added at the end. It changes the local operator, payment flow, stock, refunds, product checks, customer data and daily close.

SELLING / 10 MIN · Updated August 2026 · Planning information
Quick answer

Before production, decide whether the activation showcases, samples or sells. If it sells, name the seller of record, payment and refund process, settlement account, importer, inventory owner and category responsibilities. If it samples, confirm that the product can be brought into Korea and distributed in the planned way.

01

CHOOSE THE OPERATING MODE FIRST

A showcase, sampling activation and retail pop-up may look similar to a visitor, but they create different work behind the room. Write the mode into the brief before venue, design and campaign decisions.

ModePrimary operationEarly decision
ShowcaseDisplay, content and conversationHow products enter, leave and are secured.
SampleDistribution without a saleCategory rules, import route, batch tracking and visitor information.
SellConsumer transaction and fulfilmentSeller, payment, receipts, refunds, stock and tax.
Capture interestRegistration, membership or waitlistData owner, consent, purpose and follow-up.
02

NAME THE SELLER OF RECORD

The seller is not simply the logo on the wall. It is the party that receives the customer transaction and takes responsibility for receipts, refunds, settlement and the local consumer process.

Agree this before choosing payment equipment or writing the customer journey. If a Korean partner sells, the commercial and data relationship must be explicit.

03

DRAW THE PAYMENT AND REFUND FLOW

Map the transaction from price display to end-of-day reconciliation. Test it with the actual products, tax treatment, network and staff roles.

  • Accepted payment methods and Korean checkout language
  • Merchant account and settlement destination
  • Receipt, cancellation, exchange and refund process
  • Discounts, gifts, bundles and promotional conditions
  • Offline failure plan if payment or internet stops
  • Daily sales, cashless totals and stock reconciliation
04

OWN THE PRODUCT JOURNEY

Decide who imports, receives, stores, counts, replenishes and removes every product. Stock responsibility must be clear before the first delivery arrives.

Separate display stock, sale stock, samples, gifts and damaged goods. Record batch or expiry information where the category requires it, and plan the final disposition before closing.

05

CHECK THE EXACT PRODUCT CATEGORY

Cosmetics, food, health-related products, electrical goods and children’s products can carry specific Korean requirements. Confirm the current rules for the exact item, claim and activity rather than assuming the global pack can be sold or sampled unchanged.

For cosmetics, MFDS guidance on imported products and responsible sellers is a key starting point. Functional claims can create additional obligations.

06

SAMPLING STILL NEEDS AN OPERATING PLAN

Free does not mean unregulated or untracked. Confirm the import route, packaging, hygiene, eligibility, quantity per visitor, staff explanation and response if a visitor reports a problem.

Make the sample useful to the launch question. Record what was tried, what people asked and what they did next without creating an intrusive experience.

07

KEEP CUSTOMER DATA DELIBERATE

Collect only what the project has a reason to use. Separate information needed to complete a transaction from optional marketing permission, and state who collects it, why and how the visitor can exercise their rights.

If headquarters, a Korean operator and a marketing platform all touch the data, define the handoffs before launch.

08

RUN AN OPENING-READINESS TEST

Before the public arrives, run a complete purchase, refund, sample handout, stock transfer and daily close. Use real devices, real Korean scripts and the real team.

  • Price and promotion displayed consistently
  • Payment, receipt and refund tested
  • Product and sample quantities reconciled
  • Customer questions and escalation contacts ready
  • Incident, complaint and product issue flow rehearsed
  • Daily sales, stock and learning report agreed
09

CONFIRM BEFORE YOU COMMIT

The correct structure depends on the product, importer, seller, payment route and duration. Resolve those facts before the venue contract and design make the model expensive to change.

This is operating guidance, not legal, tax, customs, privacy or product-regulatory advice. Use qualified Korean advisers for the final structure.
Takeaway

What to do with this

Selling or sampling changes the whole operating model. Decide who owns the product, transaction, customer and local responsibility before the room is designed.
